FREE RELIGIOUS ICONOGRAPHY COURSE

We all have different ways of finding God. Painting is a beautiful way to connect with your faith and spirituality. Since ancient times humanity has used signs and symbols to communicate a specific message. Religious icons are manifestations of God dwelling among us in the flesh and invitations to a deeper union through the portals of his surface.

Byzantine monasteries and Orthodox churches have long embodied the works of thousands of iconographers.

Unlike other approaches to painting, the creation of an icon does not begin in the imagination of the artist. Rather, the iconographer’s first job is to study how the subject in question has traditionally been represented.

More and more Western Christians are rediscovering Eastern icons and the art of Iconography. Their mystery, beauty and ancient sacred language speak to us in a sublime and powerful way. However, icons and the process of creating them is not simply an artistic or aesthetic exercise.

Several universities, art and theology schools, as well as experts in this field have developed Religious Iconography Courses to provide knowledge in this area.

These courses are designed to allow you to grow as an artist and in your faith. Finding a new way to worship can redefine your relationship with God.

A Religious Iconography will show that the visual element is as vital an aspect of the expression of worship and truth as are the words spoken and the music; in fact, as the course will demonstrate, all of these elements are united in an inextricable circle of meaning.

Such an approach to Christian Iconography requires first of all an understanding of how visual language works, how to “read” its basic elements of image, figure, composition values, etc., as if they were the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of a living language. In addition, the close link between Iconography, visual style and verbal rhetoric needs to be understood.

What are the Religious Iconography Courses ?

A Course in Religious Iconography deals with research on specific topics analyzing images, stories, allegories, motifs associated with creation, Mary and Jesus, saints and symbols, mythology and the Gods.

With expert supervision, participants in this course experience all aspects of icon creation, while receiving spiritual and theological insights into the world of iconography.

Raw materials such as pigments, wood, eggs and animal glue are used. Then, through technique, prayer and sacramental life, these materials are transformed into a sacred icon. As such, an icon is a liturgical object where spirituality and material are inseparable.

You will learn about the most important stories in the Bible in order to read their artistic representations and develop visual literacy, including recognition of key characters, their epithets and attributes, their lives and natures.

You will also learn about important topics such as Bible stories, mythological events and concepts. You will also develop skills in verbal analysis and critical thinking through reading, discussing, and writing about artistic media.
