FREE ICONOGRAPHY COURSE

At the simplest level, iconography is the containment of deeper meanings in simple representations. It often uses symbolism to generate narrative, which in turn develops the meaning of a work. Densely populated iconography in images can convey specific hidden meanings.

Iconography helps to situate a work of art in a specific moment in history and also in the cultural context, because certain symbolic meanings can only be meaningful for a specific culture. We can find evidence of the process by which iconography, or representations, also acquire specific meanings in popular culture.

Currently, several universities and experienced professors in this area offer training and education through Iconography Courses. Many of these courses are given free of charge.

In an Iconography Course all aspects of icon creation and the main methodologies applied to iconographic and iconological analysis are experienced. The different types of visual discourses, iconographic genres and functions are also covered. The student’s progress in this course depends largely on their willingness to devote hours of practice in their own time.

What are the Iconography Courses ?

An Iconography Course is a program of study and training that provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret iconological meanings through the analysis of forms, composition, colors, materials, techniques

The course deals with topics such as introduction to iconographic methodology and the meaning of recurring symbols, attributes, personifications and allegories.

This course introduces students to the methods of image analysis as a source of information, as a means of communication and mode of expression, and as an object to be interpreted by the archaeologist and art historian. The program devotes special attention to iconographic vocabulary and syntax.

In this course the student will learn to use the main bibliographic tools, iconographic typologies and databases. They will be able to implement a reflection on the state and functions of images and recognize the main iconographic themes of mythology, the Bible and the life of the saints.
