What is a PhD in Linguistics ?

Linguistics is the study of language. Many Doctorate in Linguistics require students to participate in the general study of syntax and semantics, in addition to a specialty area of focus. 

A PhD in Linguistics allows students to study and research semantics and syntax along with specializations such as neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, sociolinguistics, forensics, and historical linguistics. This graduate program prepares students to become post-secondary teachers.

Doctorate in Linguistics consists of three stages. The full PhD program in Linguistics lasts 5 or 6 years: 2 years for Stage 1 and 3 or 4 years for Stages 2 and 3.

  • Stage 1, which must be completed in two years, consists of 40 hours of graduate work and the Stage 1 qualifying examination; at the end of Stage 1, students are eligible to receive a Master’s degree in Linguistics.
  • Stage 2 consists of 64 hours of graduate work, the Stage 2 qualifying examination, and the preliminary examination.
  • Stage 3 consists of the final defense deposit and dissertation

During the course of the doctoral program, students must generally take a sequence of foreign language courses and/or demonstrate proficiency in a second language.
