DOCTORATE IN ARCHITECTURE

The PhD in Architecture is a three to four year research degree, which offers the opportunity to conduct independent research under the supervision of a departmental staff member.

Unless the student becomes a member of a research group, the research is conducted by the candidate on his/her own, with regular progress checks with his/her supervisor. Students will usually have their supervisors confirmed before the start of their course and will usually meet for 45 minutes every two weeks during the school term.

The student develops a tailor-made programme together with his/her supervisor and will include attendance at the Department’s research seminar programme and other relevant postgraduate courses. Attending classes is optional, but students are encouraged to take advantage of classes offered at the Department, its universities and other departments and faculties relevant to their research topics.

What is a PhD in Architecture ?

The PhD in Architecture program prepares candidates for careers in university teaching, cultural defense and administration, museum curatorship, and publishing. However, its main objective is to educate teachers capable of effectively instructing future architects in the history of their own field and its multiple connections with culture in general.

The program forges a unique combination of professional knowledge with a historical and analytical understanding of the key phases in the history of architecture, especially those that have a demonstrable bearing on the current state of the field and the critical problems it faces.

The program ensures a solid background in historical study and historiography, imparting technical knowledge and awareness of the intellectual trends that inform the reception and role of architecture around the world. The history of science and technology (as well as their reception in popular culture and the arts), the history of the media and the understanding of architectural practice are as important as the fine arts and literature.
