What is Biology ?

Our fascination with biology has a long history. Even the first humans had to study the animals they hunted and know where to find the plants they collected for food. The word biology is derived from the Greek words bio meaning life and logos meaning study and is defined as the science of life and living organisms. An organism is a living entity that consists of a cell, p. bacteria or various cells, p. animals, plants and fungi.

It is the science of life; that branch of knowledge that treats living matter as distinct from non-living matter; the study of living tissues. It has to do with the origin, structure, development, function and distribution of animals and plants. The aspects of biological science range from the study of molecular mechanisms in cells, to the classification and behavior of organisms, how species evolve and the interaction between ecosystems.

Biology is the science of life. Biologists study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of living organisms. It is generally considered that there are at least nine fields of biology, each of which consists of multiple subfields.

Biochemistry: the study of the material substances that make up living beings.
Botany: the study of plants, including agriculture.
Cellular biology: the study of the basic cellular units of living beings.
Ecology: the study of how organisms interact with their environment.
Evolutionary biology: the study of the origins and changes in the diversity of life over time.
Genetics: the study of heredity
Molecular biology: the study of biological molecules.
Physiology: the study of the functions of organisms and their parts
Zoology: the study of animals, including animal behavior

To the complexity of this enormous idea is added the fact that these fields overlap. It is impossible to study zoology without knowing a lot about evolution, physiology and ecology. It is not possible to study cellular biology without also knowing biochemistry and molecular biology. In conclusion, Biology is the branch of science that deals mainly with the structure, function, growth, evolution and distribution of organisms. As a science, it is a methodological study of life and living beings.

It determines verifiable facts or formulates theories based on experimental findings about living beings by applying the scientific method. An expert in this field is called a biologist. Some of the common objectives of their research include understanding life processes, determining biological processes and mechanisms, and how these findings can be used in medicine and industry.
