SAFETY GOGGLES USES

The Different Uses of Safety Glasses

For Home Uses

If you don’t need prescription lenses, or if you wear contact lenses, you can buy safety glasses without a prescription at most hardware, construction, and sporting goods stores.

These safety glasses are usually made of lightweight polycarbonate for added comfort and are available in attractive wrap-around frames. For the highest protection value, choose models that have the high impact rating.

Some models are even available with a bifocal reading segment in the bottom half of the lens if you are over 40 and have presbyopia.

If you need prescription safety eyeglasses, you must purchase them from an ophthalmologist or optical store with a valid eyeglass prescription written by a licensed eye care professional. (The lenses will carry the manufacturer’s registered trademark and a «+».)

If you are 40 years old and have a prescription for bifocal eyeglasses, safety rated progressive lenses are available to help you see clearly at all distances without annoying bifocal or trifocal lines on the lenses.

To mow your lawn and use an electric mower or other power , choose a frame with side shields to protect it from flying particles or larger objects.

Professional Uses of Safety Glasses

Some occupations that require high-impact goggle protection include:

  • Your company’s safety officer must determine what level of protection (basic impact or high impact) is needed for your job tasks.
  • Carpenters
  • Plumbers and pipe fitters
  • Machinists
  • Workers

Some activities may require side shields, , or full face protection.

Employers and safety officers should consult OSHA to help determine which type of safety glasses is most appropriate for different jobs. For more information, visit the eye and face protection section of the OSHA Web site.

If you work as an independent contractor, it is best to choose safety glasses that have been rated to the high impact standard for all activities, just to be safer.

Safety glasses should be worn in areas marked as hazardous and in areas where hazards may be temporarily present.

Modern safety goggles have many options to provide the required protection, with minimal inconvenience to the wearer. If treated with care, they will last for years, minimizing replacement expense.

Safety glasses protect one of the most sensitive areas of the human body, the eyes. For this reason alone, it should be used in each and every case where risks may exist. The area where these hazards exist should be clearly marked, with warnings to wear safety glasses.

At the factory or workshop, impact injuries may occur from adjacent operations or walking down a aisle due to falling or falling objects, or sparks striking the eye. Please note that there may be multiple types of hazards.
