The main component that gives the color of the natural red ochre (ochre) is composed of hematites (∝-Fe2O3). The term red ochre or red earth describes several types of iron oxide pigments such as Venetian red, ivory red, English red, and Indian red. The nomenclature is by no means unequivocal and several authors have used the names differently.
The red ochre is composed solely of iron oxide, hematite whose word comes from the Greek, hema means blood. Used since prehistoric times and throughout history, these permanent pigments can be safely mixed with other pigments. Ochres vary greatly in transparency; some are quite opaque, while others are valued for their use as glazes.
