Palliative care provides invaluable assistance to patients living with serious or life-limiting illnesses and their family caregivers. Many people believe that this type of care should be included in countries’ health services and thus contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens by benefiting from treatment and increasing survival.
People living with serious, life-limiting illnesses suffer significantly. Fortunately, there are new and developing treatments that can cure some and improve the survival of many people living with serious illnesses.
However, seriously ill people and their loved ones still experience many distressing physical symptoms, as well as spiritual, social and psychological distress.
There is much we can do to help people live well with serious and life-limiting illnesses by understanding the causes of suffering, using effective communications, and incorporating careful assessments and interventions designed to address specific needs.
The first thing we can do is a Free Course in Palliative Care, so that we can begin to be a meaningful help to the most disadvantaged.
