Optometrists examine the eye and the related human visual system, diagnosing and treating related diseases and disorders. They may treat these problems, prescribe appropriate medications, or recommend appropriate eye care equipment, such as contact lenses.
In this role, they closely examine clients’ eyes using a wide range of tools. They check to determine if there are any problems with acuity, focus, or other aspects of the visual system.
Part of their job is to recommend medications to treat eye conditions. They may also prescribe glasses or contact lenses to treat visual impairment. If a patient needs additional treatment, they recommend an ophthalmologist.
