What is and What Does a Bachelor in Obstetrics Do ?

An obstetrical licensee is a person with a professional background in pregnancy and childbirth care, in some cases in women’s reproductive care. Many obstetricians work long, irregular, nighttime hours. They may travel between their offices and hospitals to care for their patients.

While on call, they may need to address a patient’s concerns over the phone or make an emergency visit to a hospital or nursing home. Some of the things obstetricians can do:

  • Normal delivery and completion of essential care steps. Obstetricians are responsible for working in collaboration with midwives to monitor and assist in the normal delivery of a woman during labor.
  • Their duties include facilitating delivery by performing an episiotomy that involves placing strategic cuts over the pregnant mother’s perineum to enlarge the birth canal.
  • Sometimes prolonged labor may require assistance to speed up the process in order to reduce maternal fatigue and fetal distress (increased heart rate and possible brain damage to the baby). This uses techniques such as forceps delivery and vacuum assisted delivery.
  • Cesarean section (or C) that requires surgical removal of the baby from the mother’s uterus to reduce complications that arise during labor. These complications, in turn, can cause death or harm to the newborn, unless delivery is accelerated by a C-section.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of ectopic pregnancy Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants anywhere other than in the uterus. It usually implants in the fallopian tubes.
